Abel Tasman National Park InformationSituated in the stunning Tasman Bay region at the top of the South Island of New Zealand, Abel Tasman National Park is one of New Zealand's most popular national parks, a unique coastal playground of immense beauty. Nestled between Marahau (to the south) and Wainui Bay (at the northern end), most people will only ever walk from Marahau to Totaranui, leaving the northerns reaches of the Park more peacefully beautiful for those who do. These small settlements are the entrance and exit points to the park, and can be reached by road from either Motueka or Takaka, which is in the Golden Bay region.
National TreasureThe Abel Tasman is New Zealand's smallest national park at 225sq km. Small in size but big on beauty! Golden beaches border the translucent turquoise sea, and sandy estuaries fringed by natural forests. The walking tracks here, both inland and coastal are world famous for there outstanding beauty. You can walk the coastal track from top to bottom in 3 - 4 days total. Or enjoy one of the many shorter, day walk options using a cruise boat, sailing catamaran, water taxi or sea kayak to enter into the Abel Tasman. If that all sounds just a little energetic just kick back on one of the many unspoilt beaches you will discover along the way.
The Abel Tasman ExperienceOnce you have experienced this majestic area for yourself you will know it will have been worth the uncomfortable airline seats and bad food you put up with to get here!!! Plus you have the added bonus of face-to-face encounters with marine wildlife and birds. Tonga Island is located in the Marine Reserve or the Abel Tasman National Park and is home to the ever-entertaining seal colony. During the months of November and December is when you're most likely to be lucky enough to spot visiting dolphins and Orcas playing in the Abel Tasman National Park waters. With any luck, you'll bring home stories that you'll want to retell for the rest of your life.
ClimateThe Abel Tasman enjoys a mild climate meaning it is perfect all year round!! The temperature is never extreme, with around 25 C in summer with great clear days and the odd refreshing breeze and 15 C in winter whose days are crisp and calm, making conditions for water activities near-on perfect. The region enjoys some of the best weather in New Zealand with about 2500 hours of sunshine each year.
